Averatec (Korean: ????) is a South Korean laptop computer brand owned by TG Sambo, the country's first computer maker. The brand first entered the American market in July 2003 and has since grown 360% to the fourth largest laptop maker, overtaking Sony in 2004 with a market share of 11.6% according to Current Analysis.[1] Averatec has operations in South Korea, North America, Taiwan and Europe.
North American laptop models come with 10.6, 11.1, 12.1, 13.3, 15.4 or 17 inch displays. They offer a wide variety of processors such as Intel Centrino, Intel Atom, AMD Turion 64, AMDSempron, or AMD Athlon XP-M.
History
Founded in 1984 as Sotec in Orange County, California, it promoted affordable PCs in the United States manufactured in Taiwan. In the early 2000s, the company renamed itself as Averatec and was purchased by South Korean computer maker TG Sambo as part of their plans to enter the U.S. market. The brand soon gained popularity with the Averatec 55500 model, and its success in the U.S. market made TG Sambo introduce the brand also to its home market, South Korea, as well as Europe and Taiwan.
In August 2006, they released a portable GPS unit called the Voya 350.
In May 2007, the company released the 2301 and 1579 models pre-loaded with Windows Vista in North America.
Update: Averatec seems to have exited the American Market. The www.averatec.com website is permanently down. The products are not available except as used items on E-Bay. The www.trigem.com website is completely out of date.
The (Averatec) MSI Wind Notebook is a family of subnotebooks / netbooks designed by Micro-Star International (MSI). Wind stands for "Wi-Fi Network Device". The first model was announced atCeBIT 2008,[1] and first listed for pre-orders on May 9, 2008.[2] While initially 8.9- and 10.1-inch screen versions existed, as of 2010 only the 10.1" remain, with a resolution of 1024×600. While most models have 1 GB of RAM, some have 2 GB, and hard disks range from 80 GB on the oldest to 250 GB on the newest models. Also featured are Bluetooth, WLAN and a 1.3MP camera. The Wind PC is MSI's response to the successful ASUS Eee PC.[3] The keyboard is 92% of full-size.
Now available by MSI are a 10" and 7" Wind Pad tablet using the Android operating system.
